50 states: 50 most Instagrammed restaurants

Kansas City, Missouri’s most geotagged restaurant on Instagram is Doughnut Lounge, which serves sweet and savory donuts, not to mention cocktails.

If a Kardashian eats in a restaurant and nobody’s around to Instagram it, does it make a buzz?

It’s not just Yelp reviews or Michelin stars that cause feeding frenzies. A restaurant with a heavy helping of ‘grams and geotags (or just one from a different type of star, like Kim Kardashian or Kylie Jenner, who are among Instagram’s most-followed celebrities) can be trending in no time. We asked Instagram to find the most popular, most posted restaurant in each state’s top cities (and Washington, D.C.) and their data specialist crunched the numbers — billions of geotags — to give us the eateries made instafamous by Instagram’s active community, over 600 million users strong.

Take these results with a grain of salt: Your state’s most instagrammed restaurant isn’t a guaranteed feast for the eyes. In Illinois and New York, for example, it’s not just food, but the cocktails that capture the eye at the most geo-tagged restaurants. Doughnuts are the draw in Kansas, Missouri and Oregon, while it’s all about pies — the savory kind — in Connecticut, West Virginia and Oklahoma. Louisiana is keen on beignets, Idaho on burgers, Michigan on barbecue, and Tennessee on, duh, biscuits. Nevada and Florida, not surprisingly, boast the clubstaurant, while New Mexico and Arkansas celebrate the cantina. What of Massachusetts and Maine, you say? Lobster and lobster, says Instagram.
