After being a part of the Los Angeles Kings’ coaching staff since 2010-11, John Stevens will be promoted to head coach, the team announced Sunday.

Stevens, 50, replaces Darryl Sutter, who was fired along with general manager Dean Lombardi, this offseason. Stevens was most recently the Kings’ associate head coach.

"John and I had very productive dialogue this last week in relation to his head coaching philosophy and specifically how he would implement a strategy to activate our players offensively while maintaining the defensive philosophies we have come to be known for," GM Rob Blake said in a statement. "I am confident that we are both in agreement on how that can be executed.”

Stevens has previous coaching experience, as he led the Philadelphia Flyers for three-plus seasons (2006-07 through 2009-10). He also was an interim head coach with the Kings in 2011-12. Stevens has a 122-111-34 record as head coach.

Los Angeles has missed the playoffs in two of the past three seasons, finishing fifth in the Pacific Division with a 39-35-8 record in 2016-17.

The Kings will introduce Stevens on Monday at a 4:30 p.m. ET news conference. They will announce the rest of the coaching staff later this offseason, according to the team statement.
