As expected, Kansas is the new No. 1 team at the top of the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll. If the Jayhawks are going to stay there, however, they’re going to have to earn it this week.

KU received 23 of 32 first-place votes this week. The Jayhawks replace Baylor, which dropped to No. 6 after a loss at West Virginia. The Bears only stayed one week at No. 1 after their loss to West Virginia.

Kansas could have the same outcome as its Big 12 rival with a stiff road test Monday at Iowa State.

Villanova moved back up to the No 2 spot and picked up four first-place votes. UCLA got a pair of firsts and edged ahead of Gonzaga for the No. 3 spot. The Zags, the last unbeaten team in Division I, received three No. 1 nods but stayed put at No. 4. Kentucky rounds out the top five.

Taking the biggest tumble in this week's rankings in Duke. After road losses to Florida State and Louisville, the Blue Devils dropped 11 spots to No. 18.

No. 24 South Carolina and No. 25 Maryland join the poll this week, replacing Minnesota and Southern California.

Northwestern, just 10 points behind the Terrapins, missed out on being ranked for the first time since USA TODAY Sports took over the rankings in the 1991-92 season.
