Scott Dixon's mother on Taco Bell robbery: He 'didn't take it seriously' when gun was held to his head

Chip Ganassi Racing IndyCar driver Scott Dixon (9) is congratulated by team owner Chip Ganassi after winning the pole position for the Indianapolis 500 during Armed Forces Pole Day Sunday, May 21, 2017, afternoon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Scott Dixon didn't believe it was real when he and Dario Franchitti were robbed at an Indianapolis Taco Bell Sunday night, according to a story from the NZ Herald.

"Scott didn't take it seriously to start with when the gunman held a gun to his head," Dixon's mother Glenys told the Herald.

Dixon's mother revealed additional details about the robbery.

"They had already got (Dixon's wife) Emma's wallet and then they were asking for Scott and Dario's mobile phones," she said. "Scott said they didn't have their phones and then a car came up behind and the (robbers) ran off."

Glenys also told the Herald that, were it not for a last minute change of plans, Dixon's wife and 7-year-old daughter Poppy would have been in the car as well.

"Emma and Poppy were meant to go with Scott and Dario but at the last minute Poppy wanted to stay back with the crew," she said.

When the story was published Tuesday, Glenys had not yet spoken to her son.

"As a mum I was freaking out," she said. "I haven't spoken to him but he texted me before and said he would ring me a bit later."
