Mark Trumbo, Orioles agree on three-year contract worth more than $35 million

The Baltimore Orioles and slugger Mark Trumbo have reached agreement on a three-year contract worth $37.5 million, according to a baseball official with direct knowledge of the agreement. The official spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because Trumbo must pass a physical for the deal to be official.

Mark Trumbo flourished in his one season in Baltimore.

Trumbo, 31, led the major leagues with 47 home runs in 2016, his first season in Baltimore. He's averaged 34 home runs per 162 games over his seven-year career, but a glut of right-handed power-hitters on the free agent and trade markets depressed his value this winter.

So a return to Camden Yards became economically appealing for he and the Orioles, who last season slugged a major league-high 253 home runs. He'll slide back in among Manny Machado (37 homers), Adam Jones (29 homers) and Chris Davis (38 homers) in what was a punishing lineup that helped Baltimore reach the AL wild-card game. Trumbo ripped another homer in that 5-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
