A key five-match winning streak gave the West Allis Central wrestling team a victory over West Allis Hale in a Greater Metro Conference dual meet on Jan. 26.
Cody Kibler downed Devan Kotas at 160 pounds to put the Huskies up, 17-15, midway through the dual, but the Bulldogs answered with five victories to go up, 33-17, and then held on for a 33-29 triumph.
The dual meet will be the final conference meeting between the two teams because the Bulldogs will shift to the Woodland Conference next season, so it was a sweet victory for Central coach Jon Nelson.
"We were proud to beat our crosstown rivals this year," Nelson said. "It was a fantastic dual to be at, and we saw good sportsmanship by both teams."
Both squads will be at the GMC Tournament at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, at Sussex Hamilton. Menomonee Falls is the favorite, having won the dual-meet title at 6-0, and Central went 5-1 in duals.
Central won the first three matches against the Huskies last week, with Ed Jiminez (120 pounds) pinning Ben Kansaku with 1 second left in the second period, Ricky Talsky (126) dropping Alex Loing in the third period after trailing 4-1 and Devin Dietrich (132) topping Brandon Baltz for a 15-0 lead.
The Huskies won the next four bouts. Marshall Rushton (138) pinned Alex DeJesus, Bryan Jordan (145) posted a major decision over Zach Meyer, Peyton Mocco (152) notched a major over Joe Gerhartz and Kibler (160) downed Kotas to put Hale ahead 17-15.
Central then answered with its winning string. Jake Schultz (170) topped Austin Spitzer, Dustin Diebitz (182) defeated Dylan Allen, Jeff LeFlore (195) beat Juriel Vegal and Darius Adkins (220) toppled Justin Schroeder.
At that point, heavyweight Prentiss Johnson just had to win his match to seal the team victory, and he pinned Dalton Wetley to wrap up the meet at 33-17.
Hale finished with pins from Conner Rodriguez (106) over Haylie Lenz and Charlie Wagner (113) over Carson Matysik.
