Ryan Haertel continued his strong outside shooting to help boost the West Allis Hale boys basketball team to its first victory of the season on Dec. 9.

Haertel pumped in 32 points, including six shots from 3-point range, to lead the Huskies to a 76-56 triumph over Brookfield East in the Greater Metro Conference opener.

The senior shot 13-of-20 from the floor (65 percent) and 6-of-13 from 3-point range (46 percent) on the evening. He has hit 13 shots from 3-point range in 23 tries (57 percent) for the young season.

He collected 20 first-half points to help Hale go up 43-26 at the break.

Brandon Barr added 10 points and 11 assists, and Michael Johnson put in 12 points and played solid defense on East's top player, Jake Graf. Jordan Breznik led the Huskies with eight rebounds.

"Ryan was very good, as usual," coach John Palesse said. "Brandon had another solid performance, Michael played well on both ends of the floor and Jordan played with a lot of energy."

The Huskies came back after allowing 71 points to Waukesha South in their season opener the previous week.

"Our defense really improved after a poor performance," Palesse said. "I liked our energy and how we bounced back from a disappointing loss. We had a good week of practice and really focused on our defense. Now we need to sustain that effort and energy."

Hale will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Sussex Hamilton and then take on Waterford at 7:30 Monday, Dec. 19, at home.
