The season got off to a nice start for the West Allis Hale girls volleyball team, which won its own quadrangular meet Aug. 24 with a 3-0 mark.
The Huskies downed Waukesha West, 25-21, 25-16; Waterford, 25-18, 25-21; and New Berlin Eisenhower, 28-26, 27-25, to start off the campaign with a 6-0 set mark and 3-0 match record. Eisenhower wound up second with a 2-1 record.
"I'm very happy with the results, as we never gave up on any play and played with great energy and passion," coach Leng Sayaovong said. "This is the first time in five years at Hale that we started the season 6-0 in sets and 3-0 in matches. The four captains of the team, KellyAnn Sotiros, Taylor Supple, Maddie Lawson and Abby Arena, showed great leadership with their communication and play on the court."
All four players have plenty of experience from previous seasons.
Sotiros paced the Huskies in assists for the tournament with 58, and Supple collected four service aces and 28 digs. Lawson led the team in blocks with 10, and Arena posted three aces.
Zoe Burczyk led the way in digs with 34, and Kaylie Barr added five blocks for Hale.
"We had multiple players step up during crucial moments of each match," Sayaovong said. "We struggled a little bit with our serving and serve/receive, which allowed the other teams to get back into each set, but our defense was very good. We are still a work in progress and will need to shore up our serving and serve/receive, but I believe with more time together, we can surprise some teams this season."
The Huskies will play in the New Berlin West Tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, and will take on Brookfield Central at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at home in a Greater Metro Conference dual meet.
