Former Greenfield High School standout Bella Matthias started her University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball career in style.

Matthias hurled a no-hitter in her collegiate debut, a 4-0 victory over Roger Williams of Rhode Island in a nonconference doubleheader in Florida last week.

Matthias, a two-time Now Newspapers All-Suburban Player of the Year, allowed the first two hittersĀ to reach base on a hit-batter and walk but then retired the next 21 batters, with 12 strikeouts.

Her sparkling performance is Whitewater's 17th no-hitter in school history and the first since 2012, when Katie Boyle tossed a perfect game. It was also the first seven-inning no-hitter since 2005 and the first seven-inning no-hitter by a freshman.

Whitewater won the second game as well, 9-1, in five innings.

Matthias finished her Greenfield career with 54 victories, earned run averages under 1.00 each season and 1,004 strikeouts.
