Strong performances at crucial times gave the Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI boys swimming team the Woodland Conference championship on Feb. 4.
The Greenfield co-op tallied 447 points to top Wauwatosa's 403½ points in the nine-team meet at the Greenfield Natatorium.
The local group was at its best at the end of the meet to pull away from Wauwatosa after a tight battle for most of the day.
The "PG-squared" team won three of the last four events and took second in the other, and that sequence in itself was good for 117 points.
The co-op scored 66 points just in the 100-yard backstroke (the third-last event), coming in with three of the top four spots and five places overall.
Stasik wins 100
Harrison Stasik won the 100 backstroke in 57.96 seconds and was followed by teammates Steve Novinska in second (59.16), David Turner fourth (1 minute, 4.17 seconds), Bharat Kothapalli ninth (1:08.36) and Justin Baerwald 12th (1:12.23).
"The 100 backstroke was the one event that really separated us from the Tosa swimmers," coach Dale Schrank said. "Wauwatosa never got close after that point."
Earlier in the meet, Ben Davis swam the 200 freestyle in 1:43.33 to take first and touch out Wauwatosa's Dan Larson (1:43.38), who was last year's state champion in the 100 freestyle and state runner-up in the 200 freestyle.
The other first places for the co-op were the 200 freestyle relay team of Davis, Jackson Zgola, Novinska and Carmelo Patti with 1:32.56 and the 400 freestyle group of Novinska, Stasik, Isaac Jiardini and Zgola at 3:26.47.
"This was a top-to-bottom, total team effort," Schrank said. "Every swimmer on the team contributed to the team total, and every swimmer had either season- or lifetime-best efforts in the process."
The co-op followed its four championships with six additional seconds from Jiardini in the 200 individual medley (2:03.02) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.01); Novinska in the 100 butterfly (57.81); Stasik in the 100 freestyle (51.49); Davis in the 500 freestyle (4:46.29); and the 200 medley team of Stasik, Jiardini, Kothapalli and Patti (1:46.14).
Coming in third were Zgola in the 200 IM (2:09.17) and Patti in the 100 freestyle (51.69), and fourth places went to Patti in the 50 freestyle (23.56), Zgola in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.69) and the 200 medley B team of Turner, Matt Ballman, Davis and Ryan Haessly (1:50.77).
Kothapalli took sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:03.8) and Haessly seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:57.56) and the 500 freestyle (5:20.28, which was 18 seconds faster than his previous best).
The 400 freestyle B relay team of Kothapalli, Turner, Haessly and Colin Hassel came in 11th (3:53.1), and 12ths went to Hassel in the 200 IM (2:33.11) and Turner in the 50 freestyle (25.71).
Schrank also praised Michael Rodriguez and Brandon Washburn for their efforts in the meet.
Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI will next compete in a WIAA Division 1 sectional meet at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Waukesha South.
