The medal podium was a popular place to be for the Whitnall girls swimming and diving team at the WIAA Division 2 State Meet on Nov. 11.
The Falcons captured seven spots in the top six of various events, thus earning medals in the annual event at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Natatorium.
Those high finishes also added up to 134 points for a solid seventh place in the 38-team meet, which was won by Madison Edgewood at 337 points.
Whitnall beat six Woodland Conference foes: Brown Deer/University School of Milwaukee (12th with 67 points), New Berlin West (14th with 54 points), Wauwatosa West (18th with 40 1/2 points), Shorewood (24th with 21 points), Cudahy (28th with 15 points) and Greendale (29th with 13 points).
The Falcons finished only six points out of fifth place, which was taken by Baraboo with 140 points.
Junior Kelly McElvain earned the highest place, capturing third in the 500-yard freestyle with 5 minutes, 10.25 seconds.
Taking fourth were sophomore Nicole Beckman in the 100 butterfly with 57.51 seconds and junior Brooke Miles in the 100 backstroke at 58.97 seconds.
Senior diver Alyssa Doherty continued Whitnall's fine tradition in that event, claiming fifth with 401.7 points.
Snaring sixth places were McElvain in the 200 individual medley with 2:11.53 and Miles, McElvain, Beckman and junior Katelyn Bloomer in the 200 medley relay with 1:51.25 and the 400 freestyle relay with 3:40.65.
Beckman came in ninth in the 200 IM with 2:14.17 to close out Whitnall's scoring.
The Falcons were able to grab a top-10 team place despite having only five girls at the meet, which is a notable feat and speaks to the talent on the squad.
They put together a nice season, winning the South Milwaukee Relays and being competitive in both major Woodland events, taking third in the relays and fourth in the conference meet. They were also third in their WIAA sectional meet.
Whitnall will lose only Doherty from its state meet squad and will return Miles, McElvain, Beckman and Bloomer, among others, next season.
