The Marquette Invitational annually provides a stern test for boys swimming teams entering the second half of the season, and the Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI co-op squad passed that test.

The 'PG-squared' unit tallied 149 points for a solid sixth place in the 22-team field, which was led by Madison West with 319 points. The Jan. 9 meet also featured such powers as Brookfield, Waukesha South and Middleton, as well as squads from Illinois.

'This is a very competitive meet and is primarily designed for upper-level and experienced swimmers,' coach Dale Schrank said. 'It is a great checkpoint before the big meets at the end of the season to make sure the season is developing as the coaches are hoping.

'Our swimmers responded exceptionally well, and we are well-positioned to be a very formidable team at the end of the season. We had a number of personal-best times, which is impressive considering how hard we are training.'

Rick Davis earned the highest spot, claiming third in the 200-yard individual medley with a personal-best 1 minute, 59.35 seconds.

Teammate Isaac Jiardini came in fourth in that race with a season-best 2:00.55.

Capturing fifth were Tyler Lustig in the 500 freestyle (4:49.1) and the 200 medley relay team of Jiardini, Rick Davis, Lustig and Ben Davis (1:41.67). Jiardini placed sixth in the 500 freestyle (4:50.26).

Lustig also took seventh in the 100 butterfly (54.15 seconds), and eighths went to Rick Davis in the 500 freestyle (4:55.93) and the 400 freestyle team of Jiardini, both Davises and Lustig (3:26.56).

Ben Davis snared 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:51) and 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:04.58), giving the combined team four of the top 12 places in the 500.

The 200 freestyle unit of Steve Novinska, Ray Smith, Carmello Patti and Harrison Stasik came in 14th (1:38.48) to round out Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI's scoring.

Schrank said Ryan Haessly, Matt Ballman, Zach Semancik, Smith, Stasik and Patti all posted personal-best times in the meet, and Novinska had season-best efforts.

Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI also downed New Berlin, 95-75, in a Woodland Conference dual meet Jan. 6.
