Ben Davis of the Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI boys swimming team collected a pair of fifth places and a school record at the WIAA Division 1 State Meet on Feb. 18.
Davis, a junior, claimed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with 1 minute, 41.19 seconds, which topped the school mark of 1:41.71 set by Michael Lucchesi in 2010.
He also swam to fifth place in the 500 freestyle with a season-best 4:39.56.
Davis added personal-best times in his splits as part of the Greenfield co-op team's relay efforts.
He posted a 22.06-second split in swimming with Jackson Zgola, Carmelo Patti and Harrison Stasik in the 200 freestyle relay, which finished 19th with 1:30.63.
Later, Davis notched a split of 47.62 in competing with Zgola, Patti and Stasik in the 400 freestyle relay, which came in 19th as well with 3:18.91.
Isaac Jiardini took ninth in the 500 freestyle with a season-best 4:48.48 and swam with Stasik, Steve Novinska and Patti to finish 23rd in the 200 medley relay at 1:43.55.
Coach Dale Schrank said Zgola, Stasik, Patti and Novinska each posted at least one personal-best time in the meet.
"That is not an easy feat to accomplish at this level of swimming," he said.
The Greenfield co-op came in 17th with 37 points in the 34-team meet in the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.
"This is a very tough meet to swim well at," Schrank said. "The competition is intense, the crowd is huge and the noise is incredible."
Schrank said none of the state qualifiers were seniors, so the team has a strong outlook for next season.
"We are possibly adding a really good group of incoming freshmen to the squad, so this should really set the tone for a truly incredible 2017-18 season," he said. "I am really looking forward to what memories we can create next season."
