Ben Davis of the Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI boys swimming team will be pretty busy at this weekend's WIAA Division 1 State Meet.

Davis, a junior, will compete individually in both the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle and as a member of two relay teams.

He will be joined by fellow junior Isaac Jiardini, who will compete in the 500 freestyle and on one relay team, plus relay team members Harrison Stasik, Steve Novinska and Carmelo Patti, all juniors, and Jackson Zgola, a sophomore.

All will take part in the state meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.

Davis second, third

Davis advanced through his performances in a sectional meet at Waukesha South on Feb. 11, taking second in the 200 freestyle with 1 minute, 43.91 seconds and third in the 500 freestyle at 4:42.72.

Jiardini qualified for state by snaring fourth in the 500 freestyle with 4:50.48.

Davis is in the final heat in both events, and Jiardini is in the last heat of the 500 freestyle, so both have a good shot at a medal.

"Davis was the only swimmer who did not shave down for the sectional meet," coach Dale Schrank said, "so it will be very interesting to see what kind of an additional pop he can get on Saturday."

All three relay teams came in fourth in the sectional. Stasik, Jiardini, Novinska and Patti finished in 1:42.93 in the 200 medley; Patti, Davis, Zgola and Novinska at 1:30.45 in the 200 freestyle; and Patti, Davis, Zgola and Stasik at 3:20.17 in the 400 freestyle.

"The competition was intense, but our guys that were tapered for this meet held their focus and walked away from the meet with lifetime-best times," Schrank said. "As a result, all three relays advanced to Madison."

Jiardini took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.25) and Zgola fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:08.05), but neither qualified for state.

Other top-10 efforts for the Greenfield co-op were Novinska, seventh in the 100 butterfly (57.32 seconds); Stasik, seventh in the 100 backstroke (57.18); Ryan Haessly, eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:57.75), and ninth in the 500 freestyle (5:22.82); Bharat Kothapalli, ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:04.89); David Turner, ninth in the 200 IM (2:26.45); and Colin Hassel, 10th in the 200 IM (2:35.13).

Place in 100 free

Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI had three places in the 100 freestyle with Stasik 11th (50.43), Zgola 12th (50.53) and Patti 13th (50.61).

Turner came in 13th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.4) and Novinska 15th in the 50 freestyle (23.32).

Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI tallied 258½ points for fourth place in the sectional, which was won by Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial with 429½ points.
