West Allis Hale found itself just one step short of the WIAA Division 1 girls volleyball state tournament, falling in three sets to Greendale on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Hale, 26-24, 25-22, 25-22.
Abby Arena finished with 15 kills and 15 digs to lead the Huskies in both departments. KellyAnn Sotiros handed out 31 assists, and Serina Pehowski posted two blocks. Elaine Zheng added three aces.
“Greendale played a very solid match and did not make too many errors,” Hale coach Leng Sayaovong said. “We played tough all match but gave away too many points during the crucial moments of each set and gave Greendale the momentum. It was a great match to be part of, and give Greendale all the credit, as they were very solid down the stretch of each set.”
Sayaovong said he was proud of what his team accomplished, particularly in a year when Hale was able to procure a top seed in the sectional with a young team.
“No one really thought we would be in this position to reach the sectional finals except for us,” he said. “We are very proud of each and every one of the players as they believed that this opportunity was possible from the very beginning of the season.”
Seniors were Taylor Supple, Maricis Dostelak, Ashley LeVack and Taylor Paalkowski.
“Next season, the program will be returning all of the core players, except for Taylor Supple,” Sayaovong said. “We hope that the rest of the players will learn from this experience and come back even better and stronger. We look forward to what next season will bring to Nathan Hale girls volleyball.”
