Bracey: West York mayor spewed filth (letters)

Wasko comments appalling

It is truly appalling that any elected official would spew forth such hatred and filth, let alone a mayor. As mayor of our incredible city, it is especially disheartening that this has happened so close to home.

As a fellow mayor, I'm offended, as a county resident and African American female, I am disgusted and personally hurt, particularly since I have met and have much respect for our country's president and his family.

I join the many others in calling for Mayor Wasco's resignation from office and an apology to the more than 4,000 residents he represents and the 435,000 county residents he has embarrassed.

Pa. spends plenty on education

In a recent column written by state Education Secretary Rivera, he basically wrote that he was in step with Gov. Wolf's call for increased funding of education in Pennsylvania. Well, Mr. Rivera, in my opinion both you and your boss are out of touch with reality. The problem is not spending. According to recent data, the average spending per student in the U.S. was about $11,000 per student, while in Pennsylvania it was about $14,000.

Mr. Rivera, I think you need to reread the report from your own party's Auditor General, whose conclusion was that the problem was not funding, rather it was "inept" management (starts with you). What I suggest is that you should start looking for your replacement and make a recommendation to the governor for your successor, so he or she can make a recommendation on how to fix the issues, not (like you) stand behind an imaginary funding problem which doesn't exist.

QB doesn’t belong on Time cover

Colin Kaepernick kneels during the national anthem while other NFL players raise a clenched fist in solidarity. Their actions are disrespectful and have nothing to do with honoring the flag. Some veterans who want to salute the flag don't have an arm. Some can't stand. And sadly, some lost their lives in combat. Colin needs to visit a military hospital to see the results of combat. The military is embedded in the American flag but I don't think Colin and other people realize it.

I have read numerous causes Kaepernick says he is supporting. Fair enough. He has decided to use the American flag as a stunt to get his message out. Besides promising money to organizations, Colin Kaepernick has done nothing but become a spectacle at NFL games. Colin has every right to protest. I am not mad at him or others but disrespecting the military and American flag on national television is pretty sad. There is a time and place for everything in life. Using the NFL to dishonor the military is wrong and should never be done.

Over 500 men have been murdered in Chicago this year. The number of murders is staggering and obscene. Where is Colin Kaepernick and his so-called passionate concern? There is nothing in the news about Colin helping the Chicago community. The Chicago police and community leaders are trying to help the dire situation. They belong on the front page of Time magazine, not Colin Kaepernick.

The American flag and national anthem are for everyone. Respecting them both is the right thing to do.
