Members of West Allis Central High School’s theater department have been nominated for multiple awards through a New York-based program aimed at encouraging excellence in local musical productions.

West Allis thespians learned recently they were nominated for Tommy Awards in nine categories. The recognition is linked to this fall’s musical rendition of “The Addams Family.”

Although Central students and staffers took the lead in producing this fall’s musical, students from Nathan Hale High School and West Milwaukee Intermediate School also took part in the production.

The Tommy Awards program is named after Broadway star Tom Wopat, who established it. Educators and industry professionals review high school productions and offer feedback.

The West Allis students will be honored and featured in a June awards show at the Overture Center in Madison. Two selected outstanding performers also will advance to the National High School Musical Theater Awards competition in New York next summer.
