GREENFIELD — Although plans are still being firmed up for the Wednesday, Aug. 9, grand opening of the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, store director Carol Doherty knows one thing for sure.
If anybody comes really early, even before the 7 a.m. opening, she'll have doughnuts, muffins and coffee for them.
At other Fresh Thyme openings at which she has presided, the new stores offered a bag of groceries free to the first 250 people, she said. That brought people to the parking lot in the dim hours of the morning.
Although she doesn't yet know if the Fresh Thyme opening in Greenfield at 84South at 84th Street and Layton Avenue will do the same, it will have all sorts of giveaways and samples, she said.
"It will be a culinary dream. There will be samples of pretty much everything you desire," Doherty said. And there will be live music.
All will be to celebrate the opening of a store that prides itself on its fresh fruits and vegetables and on its organic produce from certified growers. More than 50 local farms are represented. The produce section also offers more than 20 fresh cut organic herbs.
A full 25 percent of the store's floor space is devoted to produce.
Fresh Thyme also has departments found in other grocery stores including meat, beer and wine, frozen food, plus food in cans and jars and boxes, a deli and a dairy section.
But it also has a couple of things you won't generally find elsewhere. One is the bulk spice section.
Spices in bulk
"You can put a small amount in a bag and try a spice so you don't have to buy a jar," Doherty said.
"That's huge to me," she said. "You might not need a jar if it's a new recipe."
Or maybe people would just like to see if they like the flavor of a spice and not be stuck with a whole jar of it, she said.
The bulk food section has more than 400 bins of natural and organic produce, including nuts, grains, beans, flours, trail mixes, granolas, cereals, dried fruit and oatmeal.
The juice bar also is unique among grocery stores. Fresh Thyme offers four of its juice blends for sale or the staff will squeeze juice to order. And they'll do it right in front of you.
"If you want to watch us make it, come on," Doherty said.
The deli also will make custom sandwiches and has prepared salads to go anytime along with prepared meals to head up, healthy dips, such as hummus or babaganoush, an extensive olive bar, international cheeses and ready to eat rotisserie chicken.
Over in the meat department, grass-fed beef is offered along with healthy options such as bison, organic poultry and beef. The store also has fresh lamb every day.
