GREENFIELD — Local police are warning residents that if they receive a phone call featuring an automated recording that asks if they can hear it, they should hang up immediately without saying anything.

Otherwise, an answer of "yes," "sure," or "OK" will be recorded and used later to confirm fraudulent purchases, police said in a recent Facebook post.

Often the automated calls introduce themselves as a business, police said.

If residents are able to note the phone number of the caller, they can report it to the Better Business Bureau online at http://go.bbb.org/1IEd4ox and the Federal Trade Commission, police said..
