Greenfield - A 27-year-old Franklin man is facing criminal charges on allegations that he slammed his vehicle into a home here after reportedly drinking a bottle of vodka.
The suspect, Brandon R. Deja, 27, of 11770 W. Woods Road, is charged with second offense operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license.
Electronic court records say Deja failed to make his Nov. 18 initial appearance in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on the charges. A warrant was issued by the presiding judge. However, Greenfield police officials say the suspect remains hospitalized for injuries he suffered in the crash.
Deja was arrested after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a home at 4042 S. 92nd Street at about 8:10 p.m. Nov. 10.
Deja was allegedly attempting to pass another vehicle while traveling south on South 92nd Street when he lost control of his Jeep Cherokee, veered off the roadway and struck a fire hydrant, according to a police report. After striking the hydrant the Jeep rolled onto a lawn, crashed through a fence and slammed into the side of a home, causing the Jeep to roll over onto the passenger side, the report said.
According to the report, several witnesses said they saw Deja’s vehicle weaving in and out of traffic and traveling at “freeway speeds” before the crash occurred.
Deja, who police say smelled strongly of alcohol, had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was taken to Froedtert Hospital where he was treated for multiple fractures to his face and head and some internal injuries.
The homeowner and his two sons, who were home when the crash occurred, got out of the house safely and were not injured.
Police later discovered Deja was seen drinking vodka inside his vehicle in the 3700 block of West Ruskin Street about a half hour before the crash, the report said. A witness told police Deja “chucked down” a bottle of vodka while sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, and then threw the empty bottle into the witness’ front yard. An open bottle of vodka was also found inside Deja’s vehicle, according to police.
Deja was also cited for speeding, failing to install an Ignition Interlock device in his vehicle and a seat belt violation.
