WEST ALLIS - Authorities have identified the man who was fatally shot in West Allis early Saturday, May 13, as Maxwell Holt, 37, Milwaukee.

Holt was shot during an encounter with officers from West Allis and New Berlin. He shot at police, according to West Allis police.

The Milwaukee County Investigative Team, consisting of eight police departments plus the Wisconsin State Crime lab, are investigating the shooting.

According to West Allis police, an officer stopped a car matching the description of the getaway car involved in an armed robbery at a downtown West Allis business five minutes before. The officer stopped the car about 1:15 a.m. Saturday, May 13, in the area of 62nd and Burnham streets.

A passenger got out of the car, shot at the officer and fled, West Allis police said. A foot chase then ensued. Getting help from New Berlin police, officers found the suspect, Holt hiding in a Dumpster.

"During an encounter with the suspect, officers from both the West Allis and New Berlin police departments discharged their firearms. A single male suspect was
located in the Dumpster and declared deceased at the scene," a statement from West Allis police says.

No police officers were injured. The car that had been stopped drove off when the foot pursuit began, police said.

The robbery that preceded the shooting occurred at a business in the 7200 block of Greenfield Avenue. Police were called at 1:10 a.m.
