John Legend: 'Corrupt' Trump is a 'terrible president'

John Legend won't likely be performing at any White House events in the near future.

Ahead of his performance at the TIME 100 gala, the Love Me Now singer trashed Donald Trump on the red carpet, calling him a "terrible president."

"He's manifestly unqualified, not curious, not good at legislating or really anything the job requires," he said. "He doesn't have any depth about any subject. And he's also using the office of the presidency as a way to make money with himself with his businesses, so he's corrupt. I can't say anything nice about the guy, I think he's one of the worst people I've ever encountered in public life."

When asked about President  Obama's upcoming keynote speech at an event hosted by investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald LP, for which he's reportedly earning $400,000 in speaking fees, Legend wouldn't draw comparisons between the current and former commanders-in-chief.

"I think it's a silly distinction," he said. "He was never against Wall Street. The Dodd-Frank law and the other things (Obama) did were to regulate Wall Street so that they wouldn't cheat the American people and they wouldn't destroy the financial system again. And he did that, and he can still get paid to show up and speak somewhere."

Both Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen have publicly rebuked Trump and his administration. Teigen regularly directs tweets at Trump, like this February exchange, when the president tweeted, "We must keep 'evil' out of our country!" to which the supermodel replied, "What time should we call your Uber?"

Meanwhile, Legend has frequently spoken out against Trump in various interviews. "We're going through a period where Donald Trump has promised to make us a less just and less free country, and those who believe in justice and freedom are going to have to stand up for it," he said in January.

Later that month, he dedicated his PGA Awards speech to denouncing the administration's travel ban, which is currently being challenged in court.

"Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump," he said. "I want to specifically tonight reject his vision and affirm that America has to be better than that."
