Golden Globes: Here were the 8 worst dressed

Corrections & clarifications: Producer Mimi Valdes is pictured with Pharrell on the Golden Globes' red carpet. An earlier version of this story misidentified her.

The Golden Globes' red carpet is the official start to awards season —and the fashion marathon that culminates with the Oscars.

Some on Sunday night, like newcomers Ruth Negga and Issa Rae, set the bar high and made memorable first impressions. Others faltered a bit out of the gate.

1. Sophie Turner

Turner was one of the notable disappointments. The gorgeous Game of Thrones star is usually a red carpet darling, but her Louis Vuitton dress left some hard-to-answer questions, like: Is that a slit? A sheer panel? Shoulder pads? A duct tape belt? Seriously, why are there shoulder pads?

Way too much happening here.

2. Nicole Kidman

Kidman suffered a similar fate. The confusing sleeves on her Alexander McQueen dress did nothing for the radiant actress, except make us wonder if the cold shoulder trend was getting an '80s pouf twist.

We can't get over the sleeves.

3. Hailee Steinfeld

Steinfeld had eerily similar sleeves on her custom Vera Wang gown.

Just say no to the cold shoulder.

4. Sarah Jessica Parker

As did Sarah Jessica Parker, also in Vera Wang.

Not you too, SJP.

Golden Globes: The 10 best dressed

5. Sofia Vergara

And Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad.

So many freezing shoulders.

If five is a trend, it's one that will replace our other most-despised, celeb style trend: chokers.

6. Michelle Williams

Sorry Michelle Williams, we can't wait for this this trend to pass.

The necklace distracts from an otherwise nice dress.

7. Carrie Underwood

Underwood ditched her typical princess-style gowns for something a little more modern. Unfortunately, the pink Iris Serban dress inspired a lot of frosting memes on Twitter, not the sweet look we're guessing she was going for.

Like the top of a cupcake.

8. Pharrell

Pharrell and producer Mimi Valdes looked unpolished, though he remained poised through Jenna Bush Hager's mix-up heard round the Internet.

A little mismatched.
